What a life

The Web of Life

Life is moving so fast there is no time to reflect and chart the future course of our actions. You have to do everything together these days and hope that every piece falls in the right place. I have learnt that whether we like it or not, luck plays a big role in life. Yes, like everything else, this also is unfair. But that’s the way it is.

Also, the value of 22 years of education has to an extent increased and decreased in my eyes. Certainly, unlike what was promised for one-third of my life, education is not everything. It alone can’t help you, as they say ‘make it large’ in life. Education can help you achieve the basics. It can also help you define your starting point in life. However, no matter what you do, education in itself has very little scope of being a differentiator (unless you are a NASA based rocket scientist or something). Differentiators will always be things over and above education. It can be things like people skills, attitude towards clients, ability to sweet talk your boss and many other things. This is where the game changes. At the end of the day, the basics in most of the jobs are fairly simple. It is ‘what else you do’ that differentiates you from others and these are things that are not taught in schools. This game of networking, sweet talking and back stabbing is very important in life. Afterall, a mix of all this, combined with basic work we do, is the only differentiator that we possibly can create in our careers. The reason why many people who we feel are not as good as us are promoted is perhaps the same. Although their bottom lines might be lower than ours, when it comes to the mix, their figures are certainly better than ours.

Dont get me wrong. I am not saying that education is not important. It is certainly important. It opens our eyes to the world around us. It also helps us write intelligent posts (unlike this one). I am just saying that it is not everything. What matters more in life are the experiences that we have had, the different people we have observed and spoken to, the places we have visited, the games we have played, the amount of pressure we can take and many other such variables which do not fit in our school equation. These are the things that will differentiate us from others and make us leaders. So, the question is are we doing enough to create lock-ins in our professional lives so that their decisions are in our favor most of the times? Are we?

Crazy

Hey. Never thought life would change so quickly. Never thought I would miss people so much. When people wrote ‘we miss friends’ on Facebook, I never gave a damn. Now, I can’t believe  that it’s happening to me. I miss those days. Madly. Like anything. I hate schedules. I hate  filling time sheets. I love the irrational. That’s what i have always been. Unpredictable, bizarre,  confused, still passionate to achieve something. But don’t know what. That was my life.  Anything else is boring. It still is. Dreaming big. Working hard. Life will be so good if it moves  from project to project, place to place with no hangovers, no memories. Alas, life seems to have a  mind of its own and my dimaag and its; are yin and yang. I have always been desperate. I walk  fast as if I am going somewhere when I don’t even know why I am walking. Chasing something  I know not. Impatient for something I have no clue of. I am so stupid. As always, I am not in my  control.

I want to halt, think and change. I want to meet and thank all those who love me. I want to be more organized as well as more random. I want to read. I want to think ugly unusual thoughts. I want to disagree with everyone. I want to shout and tell people that they are wrong. I want to impose my ideas on everything and everyone and then disagree with my own ideas and come out with new ones. I want ideas to be more liquid than solid.

Forget this post guys. This is a tragedy.

Remembering Home: Bareilly – The Days Gone By

While looking for my friends’ updates on Facebook, I came across a group called Bareilly. I went down to see the posts as I belong to this city and home for me has always meant Bareilly. That is when I came across this beautiful piece written by Ms. Anuradha Khandelwal (Click here to visit her Facebook page). I don’t think I have ever read anything that describes my city, the life and the culture so vividly.

I want all my friends and people who have lived in Bareilly or have memories connected with it, to read this. This article will take you all down the memory lane and think of magical times that make them want to go back to this wonderful place again and again. Ms. Khandelwal, thank you for writing it. Here it goes:

All the people who have ever lived in Bareilly and are displaced all over the globe have this constant hankering of what Bareilly was…so I thought…lets just try and remember it all and post it for posterity!

For the layman Bareilly comprises of just Civil Lines…which kinda sums up half of Bareilly and Rampur Gardens and then comes Cantt. The interiors like Badey Bazaar, Shyamatganj, Alamgiriganj…are the Puraney Sheher ke illakey! Did a jhumka really fall in the Bareilly ka bazaar? But it made Bareilly a well-known name allright! So once the Bans Bareilly becomes the Jhumka wala Bareilly while Rae Bareli is the Gandhi stronghold…not to be confused with our Bareilly…okay?

Dina Nath ki Lassi which has every native or in transit bareillyite drooling! Liquid platinum topped with malai and a few chironji danas –cold and the ideal sip for weary travellers, tired shoppers, the college crowd and anyone and everyone…the great leveller! From the Rickshawalla to the Honda Civic Tribe, everyone loves Dina Nath ki Lassi! Next door is Ram Bharoosay ki Chaat…and next to that Tyagi Restaurant…yummy choley, aloo-puri and a runny meethi sonth! And two shops away is Ramchander – the best curd in town! And hot milk and hot jalebis and samosas throughout the day!

All these places have been around for decades and decades and nothing has changed except the prices and the person behind the cash counter! Father, then Son and then Grandson; and behind the counter are the garlanded photographs! These places have survived but many have closed down too.

Rios…the name itself will conjure up lots of images for a lot of people. In the midst of this North Indian Culture of puri-aloo-jalebi-chaat, came Rios…like a whiff of fresh air. A kinda takeoff from Flurys of Calcutta…a tea-room! The huge keema samosas or aloo-matar ones served with tomato sauce and green chutney on a plate with a fork and knife! Rios took eating a samosa to another level altogether! And they weren’t the run of the mill samosa…They were huge and delicious! The smell of pastry hit you as you entered Rios cool interiors – dim lights, brown lush furniture and air conditioning – and the Pineapple Pastries…melt in the mouth stuff…and huge tumblers of cold coffee with ice cream!

A generation of Bareillyites actually has spent their youth lolling around there every day at three o clock to have their tea and snacks! And the fabulous food! I have had the best Rogan Josh ever there…and the best Club Sandwich. After I got engaged, we had a lunch party at RIOs…It was THE place. But as it faded away into a shopping complex, many of us still remember the good times, the scent and smells and the lingering taste our palates are trying to recall. Thank you Mr. Pant for one of a kind RIO. Nothing has come anywhere near it as yet!

Miglanis near Hind Cinema had Salami and Sausages and such stuff. Panditji ki Chaat near the Iton wala Dharamsala in Alamgiriganj – now shifted to Baatashey waali gali…still the best Baniya Chaat in the world. I say Baniya because the other people in Civil Lines have onions in their chaat. Though they all have their clients…Cheap Chaat and cheap Chinese!

Buns and Omelet outside Fabrikraft (the first boutique in Bareilly I think…which is still going strong!) and chanas and Hansmukh Chacha ki Dal Chana mix with a dollop of butter and a crumbled papdi. Ganesh Juice and Deepak ki kachori and sabzis in the morning followed by Prakash’s little crisp jalebis, Kebabs and Biryanis and Pepper Chicken and kati rolls…Host, Shadows (which was considered shady so haven’t been there [;)] and Pindi for Tandoori Chicken and daal roti, good wholesome dhaba food in unwholesome surroundings. But who cares when one is young??? Kipps ki Mithai, Glory ke rasgulley, Gera ki Chenna Murki, Beharipur dhaal ke swaal aloo. Hot milk at the kila shops on cold winter nights and Khurchan from there or rabdi! And Holi Chowk babaji ka samosa, moong ki daal ki pakoris. He has died, so that is an end to this. Bless him! And ahead was the best Emartis! And everyone at sometime or the other must have had the Payal Seekh Kebabs!

Shopping was Rawalpindi stores. I think it began and ended with Rawalpindi Stores. Even today, now rechristened RawalPindi Modern has the best Sarees in this part of the World. And the older generation all remember Shyamji, while we all swear by Bunty! No one has better taste in sarees, this I can say with experience. Every saree in my wardrobe is from there…from my engagement saree onwards! Barring a few I pick up from Kolkata and with Mipakshi joining in there are other stuff too. And the men’s wear was really good which became Origins. With its closing I am sure a lot of people including me feel the lack of a one stop shop for menswear! I miss Billa and Amit. It was such a pleasure going there!

And who can forget Syndicate…better known as Syndi…A generation has grown up graduating from baby books to heavy duty fiction, under the watchful eye of Mr. Verma (God bless his soul) and now his wife Santosh who runs the place still and has a good knowledge of books. Lots of books have been bought as gifts and she knew who reads what. Keep the written word flag flying Santosh!

For white goods one went to Parmanand Chicker for Godrej or PD Gooba near Khadi Ashram. The Chickers now have an all girls’ school. And where one got Godrej Fridges, one can buy Levis now! Bareilly Club was elegant but a trifle world weary, torn black leather couches strewn. But now its become proper and lost its elegance though! Its okay, nothing much – the fish fingers have become like fish thumbs – quantity is less, quality is down but everyone makes trips there…nostalgia!

B. I Bazaar was on the hit list if you had a car and everyone had to stop at Alphas to pick up videos of the latest movie…Pappu Chawla had a good stock, was always pleasant and spoke well to everyone. May he rest in Peace! After he died, Alpha lost its sheen. Hakimji (he still hasn’t returned my silver that he had taken to polish. I wonder what can I do about it…it was substantial). Gera and London Book Depot were the other stops! Ferns Bakery for the mutton Pattis on the way out from the Cantt area!

Bareilly was green and beootiful and uncongested…And then they started felling the trees…making ugly structures…and see what we have now…A horrifying town full of dirt and garbage and heat waves emanating from the bare lands! I remember the cool Bareilly when April Showers were the norm and temperatures always came down fast. Now there is no respite for days on end!

Give me back those days…when Hanuman Mandir was a small place and between Ayub Khan Chouraha and Chowki Chouraha there was a broad road lined on both sided with huge trees, a quaint little church where the eyesore Butler Plaza stands…and the imposing huge Red brick Church…and nothing more. Far to your left, you would see the lights of the Mission Hospital, an imposing structure gone to rot and now being revived. Mission Hospital has played home to one of the Nobel Laureates who did a stint here. This year list…so Bareilly has something to be proud of besides Priyanka Chopra, Baba Sehgal etc.

Now the crowds tend to get to you. The generators on the road send out hot signals to the already hot atmosphere, the sidewalks are chockablock with hand carts selling everything and anything…and there is no parking anywhere. Every shop has its wares on the road. People spit, throw plastic and garbage on the road, shops are swept and the rubbish is piled up on the roads. I think we need an SOS for Bareilly…SOS!!

Please save Bareilly’s Soul!

New Life: Past one Month

This is for people who know me. The rest, you can skip this one. Trust  me, it is going to be very boring for even those who know me. So, you can very well imagine what a torture it will be for you.

Dear Friends,

I have been away from the net for the past one month and it was tough. I  never knew I was so addicted to it. I am not much of a Facebook user either,  so don’t think it is because of that. The real reason is that I take all my  information and readings from the net. Earlier it used to be Google searches  but now Twitter has given us a chance to share some really interesting  stories. I have interests in management, public relations, advertising,      music, books and sustainability and twitter allows me to be more informed  as I follow people who are experts at these issues. More than talking,  Twitter is a sharing forum for me and that is what I missed the most when I  was away from it. I missed the articles by The Harvard Business Review the  most as I depend on them for giving me a perspective. Similarly I missed  Brian Solis for Social media and Anand Mahindra for some interesting  facts. I also missed Anusha Yadav for those wicked-witty ones.

The past one-month has been interesting but I have been really B.U.S.Y. It’s  a shame that I have never been very clear as to what I would like to do but I  am enjoying my work a lot and it seems it is something I would like to do for some amount of time. Life is nonetheless good and after a long time it is following a schedule. It will take some more time to be entirely comfortable with it.

I have lost my Vision W. It’s a personal movie player from Creative, much like an i-pod but definitely better than it. Some guys mugged me in the Volvo bus. Yes, I got beaten also, which is very sad. You all can laugh, its ok, I know its funny but I really miss the player. Also, I have not been able to read even a single book from the time I have come to Bangalore. Somehow, I just don’t feel like reading anything. The rest is fine.

I do miss you all although I don’t call that often, or maybe ever. I just want time to seep into this new life. Till then I will lie low and be a recluse. Don’t mind my behavior. This is my way of coping with change. It will take me sometime. Do let me know how things are on your end. Must say that Bangalore is a happening place on weekends when college people meet. We still get along like a house on fire and the smiles and chatter take me back to the good old days. Keep me posted about what is happening with all of you. I would love to know about new boyfriends or girlfriends and even more about girlfriends getting new girlfriends and boyfriends getting new boyfriends, if you know what I mean. ;) .

Cheers.

Rin Ad and Our Attitude

This is about the very famous Rin vs. Tide ad. I am unable to understand why so many people are crying foul over it. It is competition in its best and truest form. If I have a better product why should I shy away from proving it to the rest of the world and more importantly to my customers? Hindustan Unilever has done exactly that and smashed P&G black and blue in their face. It is a smart ad that is aggressive, to the point and without any pretensions. It is reflective of the generation that we belong to. Come to think of it, are we all not like the Rin ad? Look at the type of TV shows we watch, video games we play and attitudes we carry. We are the children of Maya who want the best of everything. Convenience is the buzzword of our generation. We all somehow do not understand the meaning of the word ‘sacrifice’. If any of you do not agree with me, look at the society around you and take a look at yourself again. You, me, we all – including the baba’s, the priests and the yogis are materialistic first and idealists second. In fact, we all are as blatant as the Rin ad.

Ok I am veering away from the topic. But I want to. We all love freedom. We all dress in the best of whites that we have, go to the Independence Day and Republic day celebrations, get a laddoo and come back. But what is independence to us? The idea of independence is linked to the idea of sacrifice because true independence only comes by sacrificing for the common good of the society. Look at Shaheed Bhagat Singh and you will understand what I mean to say. The question that I want to ask is- Do we have the capacity to sacrifice for the greater good of the society?

Today, I don’t see anyone who wants to do that. When it comes to emissions, we shirk away responsibility by saying that we are a developing nation and we cannot stop polluting as our economy will suffer. We all attend thousands of talks and seminars on protecting the environment, conserving water, saving tigers and all the blah in the world and treat it as such. BLAH. The usual excuse is that we do not know what we as an individual can do to save environment. However, if you have to buy the latest cell phone you as an individual will go through hundreds of websites and check thousands of reviews before buying one. True freedom is doing the same for the issues that confront us as a society today. There are thousands of methods of protecting the environment, all we have to do is to open our minds and laptops and click a few buttons.

We as a nation are so tied up with big ideas that we forget to do what was taught to us in class two. All we have to do is to be a little honest, little forgiving and a little generous. If we can do that, we will be able to solve half of the problems that we face today. The HLL attitude is great but we need to apply that straightforwardness and truthfulness to things that benefit the community also. If we can do that, we will do just fine.

Chatroulette – The Irresistible Tease

I tried Chatroulette.com today. I really do not have a very clear-cut idea of how I felt but I will try to explain. First of all, to the unaware, let me tell what Chatroulette is all about. Chatroulette is a website that allows you to have a video chat with a complete stranger.  When I say complete stranger, I mean a complete STRANGER. There is no way you will be able to decide whom you can video talk with. The person in front of you can be of any sex, nationality, color, age etc. and you will have absolutely no control on who would be viewing you and whom you would end up viewing. All that you will have will be a ‘NEXT’ button that you can press if you don’t like the person on the screen. Then, you will be connected to some other random stranger. If you don’t like him you can press ‘next’ again and go on doing it till you find the ‘right’ person. Feels strange? Trust me, the experience is even more bizarre.

Come to think of it, we all meet strangers in every walk of our lives. Whenever we may go – office, market, school we find strangers everywhere. Even when we enter into a new chat room, we are surrounded by people we don’t know. So what is so different about Chatroulette?

The difference is that when we confront strangers in our normal lives, most of the time we have a reason to talk to them. We buy fruits, make small talk to cut time, discuss train schedules, ask for directions and do many other things that have a purpose behind them. Moreover, in most of these circumstances we have a choice to select the person we think will be good to us.

Chatroulette is different. Here none of these comfort-zones of purpose or reason are present. It is not like a half empty bus in which you can decide where to sit. It is like a packed bus in which only the seat next to you is empty. The stranger who decides to come and sit there can be a drug addict reeking of alcohol and nicotine, planning to molest you whenever he gets a chance or he can also be a good looking hunk who works in a software company, earns fifty grand a year and feels that you are the most beautiful woman in the world. This heady cocktail of mystery, excitement and voodoo pleasure is what makes Chatroulette so irresistible to millions across the world. Every time you click NEXT your heart skips a beat as you don’t know whom to expect.

Signing into Chatroulette means that you have allowed both angels and demons to stamp into your private space, look at your face, see your body, talk to you, abuse you or do what ever they can until you press NEXT. And trust me, you will see things. Suddenly you will be able to see perverts across the world asking you to rip off your clothes for there sadistic pleasure, people indulging in live sexual acts, innuendoes directed towards your nationality, body, skin color and what not. Your body is the only commodity that you have in Chatroulette. If the person on the other side does not finds it attractive, he will press Next and might also abuse you before doing so. Therefore, for many people it will be an emotionally scarring experience and something that they will regret trying.

For the rest who feel they know how to handle their weaknesses and insecurities and are not scared to confront the most animalistic instincts of human psyche, Chatroulette is worth a try. You will see how in the absence of any fear of law and accountability, supposedly well-educated people loose their humanity in the madness and become savages. You will also find people you may absolutely adore or even fall in love with. You may talk to mothers who would talk lovingly about their children, people who might exchange recipes with you, singers who would want you to listen to their new compositions and even SRK who might log in as he is bored of his day’s schedule. You just don’t know!

All I can say is, if mystery and adventure is your holy grail, take a dip into Chatroulette.

Days in the Life of India

Featured

This is a Flickr stream of the life and times of India. The pictures in this continuously flowing stream depict the inherent contradictions and variety in the flavors that India offers. A great thing about India is that everyone has a different point of view about it. People see it the way they want to see it but it is everything they see and much more. However one fact  about India that never changes is, in this country of many colors, there is never a dull moment.
